Real Value: Advertising At Night On Philadelphia Radio

Jan 14, 2020 8:26:33 AM / by Larry Julius

Is advertising on the radio just a day job for Delaware Valley small business owners?

Thousands of local companies depend on radio advertising to market their goods and services. But, most of these business owners choose to buy commercials only between 6:00 am and 7:00 pm.  Is this a good idea? Maybe not. Here are the facts.

Last week, for instance, 3,830,493 adult consumers tuned-in to their favorite Philadelphia radio stations. This is significantly higher than the number that tuned-in to a local TV station, read a local newspaper, logged-on to social media sites like Facebook, or streamed audio from Pandora and Spotify.

But radio listeners do not roll-up their ears just because the sunsets. According to Nielsen, 57.1% of Delaware Valley consumers who listen to the radio during daylight hours, also tune in at night.

Be Heard: The #1 Job Of Every Commercial On Philadelphia Radio

Jan 10, 2020 8:19:37 AM / by Larry Julius

The number one job of a radio commercial is  not  to sell products for the sponsoring Delaware Valley small business owner.

The number one job is not to build store traffic or to create top of mind of awareness.

The number one job of a radio commercial is not to build brand or deliver ROI.

The number one job of every commercial on Philadelphia radio is to be heard. Period. When a commercial is heard, then all the rest will follow. But being heard is not easy.

At the exact second a radio commercial begins, 11,000,000 other pieces of information are all wrestling for the listener's attention.  Sadly, a consumer's brain is only capable of dealing with about 50 bits of that information at a time.

If you are a local business owner who would like to secure a larger share of the $100-billion Delaware Valley consumers will spend this year, then what you say first in your radio commercial is crucial to winning the battle for a consumer's ear.

Recession Advice For Delaware Valley Business Owners: Keep Advertising

Sep 27, 2019 8:41:00 AM / by Larry Julius

There have been more recessions in America than presidents, 47 vs. 45.  Many economists believe number 48 is looming.

The textbook definition of a recession is a period of declining economic performance across an entire economy, frequently measured as two consecutive quarters. In other words: it's a time when most Delaware Valley small business owners sell fewer of their goods and services.

There is one thing a recession is not.  It is not a time for Philadelphia area small business owners to stop advertising.

One of the greatest marketers of all time, Henry Ford, once said, "The man who stops advertising to save money is like the man who stops the clock to save time."

What you had for breakfast this morning may prove Mr. Ford's observation.

The Best Way A Jewelry Store Can Advertise In The Delaware Valley

Aug 5, 2019 7:20:00 AM / by Larry Julius

Delaware Valley consumers spend $1.3 billion on fine jewelry every year.  Angelo Breaux, President of Family & Co. Jewelry, invests in advertising on Philadelphia radio stations every week to successfully claim a large share of those dollars.

Mr. Breaux is the third generation of jewelers in his family.  His Grandfather started the business in 1937 from a tiny store-front in South Philadelphia.  In 1971, his parents moved the store to a 1600 square foot store in the Plaza 70 Shopping Center in Marlton, New Jersey.

Fifteen years ago, Mr. Breaux expanded the original Marlton store to 3200 square feet. Today, Family & Co. remains a family-owned, single location business selling brand name jewelry.

"The customers at my Grandfather's original store in South Philly pretty much came from the neighborhood. Today, with the help of our commercials on Philadelphia radio, we draw customers from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware."

Mr. Breaux's decision to invest his marketing dollars in radio is supported by market research. According to Nielsen, Philadelphia radio reaches significantly more fine jewelry buyers than are reached by local TV, newspapers, or audio streaming sites like Pandora & Spotify.

Philadelphia Businesses Owners Skip Advertising On Pandora and Spotify

Jul 29, 2019 8:32:06 PM / by Larry Julius

Of all the advertising options available to Delaware Valley business owners, streaming audio services like Pandora and Spotify are the least effective.  Here's why.

According to Nielsen, after the content of a commercial is considered, the element of an advertising campaign that drives sales the most is reach. In other words, making sure the most people possible are exposed to the advertiser's message is crucial.

When it comes to achieving reach among consumers, Pandora and Spotify rank dead last.  Advertising on Philadelphia radio stations can reach 266% more consumers than these two streaming-audio platforms combined.

Do Delaware Valley Millennials Listen To Philadelphia Radio?

Jul 29, 2019 10:48:52 AM / by Larry Julius

It's time to set some misguided Delaware Valley small business owners straight.  When we say everybody listens to Philadelphia radio stations, we mean everybody.  Generations X, Y, and Z. Baby boomers, and, yes, the millennial generation.

You know...millennials. Those are the "kids" who came of age at the turn of the millennium (which is, debatably, either 2000 or 2001).  This means 18-34 year olds.

In the Delaware Valley, 1,245,444 millennials make-up 29.4% of the adult population and will deliver $32.3 billion to local cash registers.

But here's the thing about millennials that many small business owners get wrong: millennials listen to the radio.  Almost all of them. 89.8% of them to be exact.

Advertising on Philadelphia Radio Drives 25% Growth For Local Business

Jul 27, 2019 8:41:49 AM / by Larry Julius

Households in the Delaware Valley are projected to spend $18.7 billion on home improvements over the next 12 months. Landis Block And Concrete in Souderton, PA uses advertising on Philadelphia radio to successfully earn the biggest possible share of those dollars.

The company is co-owned by Jarrod and Jamie Nyce. Their grandfather started the company in 1943 as Nyce Crete in Landis, PA which is still operated by the brothers.  Originally, the company primarily sold ready mix concrete to contractors.

That all changed, when the brother's father purchased Landis Block in 1987.  In addition to serving contractors, the new company had a retail business selling stone, block, concrete products, and other building materials to homeowners and do-it-yourselfers.
